Portraits of a Little Gymnast with a San Antonio Gymnastics Photographer
These gymnastics photo shoots are so fun for this former-acro-gymnast, San Antonio photographer to do! We have cool locations, cool tricks, and the company of those who don’t find it odd if I indulge in my sudden urges to walk on my hands or swing from something, LOL!
How beautiful is the single stag, arched handstand this eight-year-old, level 7, optional gymnast is doing!
When mom sent me a pre-arrival photo of her little gymnast and I saw the colorful, neon, SylviaP outfit she was wearing, which was not an outfit we had been planning to do photographs in, I immediately texted her back and said “Change of location! Meet me at this address first! I know the perfect location for the outfit she’s wearing!” A local artist had done a ground-to-roof galaxy mural in a rainbow of colors on one full side of this building. What an awesome spot to take photographs and the perfect compliment to her colorful outfit and fun poses and expressions!
She was showing off her flexibility with a scorpion and a y-scale!
She works on perfecting her straight body, straight kneed, pointed toes handstands every day in the gym. This day was for fun and sloppy handstands!
She is an entertaining little girl to photograph with her playful and humorous personality!
After we got all the photographs we wanted at our unplanned location, we then moved on to our pre-planned serene garden environment to showcase this eight-year-old gymnasts flexibility.
Another y-scale pose in a calmer environment
Leaping high!
Yowza! She worked hard to be able to pull off a beautiful needle! I’m so pleased we were able to capture a beautiful photograph of the result of her hard work!
We closed out the day with our photoshoot, photographing till the last rays of sunlight left the sky.
This is my favorite portrait from our shoot! What a beautiful sissone leap!
This was a bit of a difficult photograph to get. The light was pretty well gone by this point and it was almost dark. When you’re solely a natural light photographer shooting with minimal light, you have pretty much two choices. Lower the shutter speed to let in light and risk having blurry images or raise the ISO and risk noise/grain on the photograph. Well, when you’re photographing a gymnast doing a quick movement like this back handspring, the first is not an option. There’s too much movement going on to shoot with a low shutter speed! So I jacked the ISO up as high as my camera could handle and caught her mid-flight in her back handspring with just a tiny blur on her leading foot! I’ll take the grainy image when I can catch a skill like this!
We took one last portrait as the sun cast its final evening ray as darkness fell. Our photo shoot was finished. What a fun evening spent with this little girl and her mom!
Gymnasts dedicate so many hours, so much energy and hard work, to their sport. Do you have a Texas gymnast who would love a photo shoot of her (or him), documenting their beloved sport and all the dedication that goes into it? Send me a message and we’ll plan a fun photo shoot to capture this important element of their childhood, along with some of their other interests and loves!
