Baby Photography on an Heirloom Quilt in Fredericksburg, TX

As a little girl, for each Christmas and birthday my auntie would put her handiworks skills to practice and create something beautiful and special for all her nieces and nephews, mainly knit dolls and colorful sweaters. As one of the youngest cousins, I got to benefit from her sweater hand-me-downs and so warm and cozy they were!

As an adult, this same aunt came to visit me for a few days and, as a fellow fabric and yarn addict, we spent our time together browsing through the local craft and sewing stores and spending way too much money growing our material stashes. While on this trip, my auntie had me choose some pretty fabrics and began cutting and piecing a patchwork quilt. For nearly five years, she spent her evenings hand sewing this quilt for me! What a treasure!

A few years ago, as I was packing for my cross country move to Texas, I had a sudden fear that something might happen to the quilt. Would it get lost or damaged in the move? A call to my brother and sister-in-law had them driving four hours to my house the week before the move so we could take some portraits of my baby niece on the quilt. If something were to happen to it in the move, we would have the photographs.

Thankfully, the quilt made it to my new home in Texas in perfect condition, but I’m very thankful to have these photographs with my brother’s oldest daughter and the labor of love my auntie created for me. Though my nieces don’t yet know their great auntie, as they grow they’ll hear the stories about what a funny, caring auntie she is and all the fun times we had with her as children! Hopefully one day they’ll be able to meet her as well!
